Hamlet

We attended a performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, adapted by Clive Duncan and staged by the cast of Vienna’s English Theatre. The production took place in the concert hall in Klagenfurt. Throughout the play, four actors skilfully switched between roles and enriched the performance with songs and instrumental pieces. The adaptation placed a strong emphasis on mental health issues, offering a modern and thought-provoking interpretation of the classic tragedy.

The plot follows Prince Hamlet, who is visited one night by the ghost of his father. The spirit accuses Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, now married to Prince Hamlet’s mother, of murder and demands revenge. This encounter throws Hamlet into deep emotional turmoil and a serious moral conflict. Determined not to act on suspicion alone, Hamlet pretends to be mad in order to investigate. However, the boundary between performance and reality begins to blur, with tragic consequences — especially for Ophelia, who descends into madness and ultimately drowns.

The performance was moving and intense, with the final scene full of suspense, revenge, and emotion. Full of impressions and reflections, we made our way to the lunch break.
